Physical DescriptionA charcoal sketch, with chalk highlights, of John Munroe Woolsey done from life. Done on buff paper, the head and shoulders portrait shows Woolsey, turned partially to the proper right, wearing a suit jacket, a white shirt, a dark tie, and eyeglasses. Woolsey’s charcoal signature is directly below the portrait: J Woolsey. The artist's stamped signature is in the lower left quadrant of the artwork page: S.J. Woolf. Stamped in purple ink in lower right quadrant is "MAR 13 1934 / 1935” followed by some illegible scribbles written in pencil and the measurement “6 x 8 ½”.

Written in pencil on the reverse of the artwork page: P-242 / L 3596.11.

The artwork page is mounted inside a window mat folder.
Historical NoteIn 1929, John Munroe Woolsey (1877-1945) was appointed by President Herbert Hoover as a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Woolsey served as an active judge through 1943.
