Physical DescriptionA small model of the 1878 New Bedford whaling bark, WANDERER, contained in a small case designed after a pilot's wheel. The wooden ship model of a three-masted ship with a black hull rests loose inside the case against a green-painted background. Written inside the case, below the ship: THE WHALING BARK / 'WANDERER' / NEW BEDFORD / 1878. The case has a glass front and metal backing and is attached to a wooden base. Typed on a paper label adhered to the reverse of the case: The / Whaling Bark / WANDERER / Last American Whaler / Built at Mattapoisette in 1879 / Tonnage 288 tons net / Dimensions 116 ft long / 27 ft beam 16 ft draft / Crew 32 men / Wrecked in Buzzards Bay / August 27 1924 / Model constructed by / Charles A. Dunn Jr.
Historical NoteThe model was presented to President Roosevelt by the maker, Charles A. Dunn, Jr. The WANDERER was built at Mattapoisette, Massachusetts in 1879.
