Physical DescriptionA painted balsa wood ship model of the destroyer, USS PRESTON (DD-327). The ship is painted gray and black. The number 327 appears on the hull. Several flags, including the American flag, can be seen flying on the ship. The model sits unfixed on a wooden base.
Historical NoteThis model of the USS PRESTON was presented to President Roosevelt by the maker, George H. Maynor of Miami, Florida, in June 1940. Maynor later joined the United States Navy and served aboard the USS HORNET. He survived the loss of the ship during the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on October 26, 1942.

The model was likely based on a series of articles by E. Armitage McCann published from December 1930 - April 1931 in "Popular Science" magazine. The articles contained information and plans for a model of the USS PRESTON (DD-327).
