Physical DescriptionA multicolored, hooked throw rug featuring the three-masted, square-rigged screw sloop-of-war, USS HARTFORD. It depicts a side view of the ship at full sail on open water. The hull of the ship is red, black, and white, and a single smokestack rises from the center of the deck. An American flag flies at the stern. Hooked below the image, between two red, white, and blue patriotic American shields, is red text that reads: U.S.S. HARTFORD. The rug has a red, white, and blue border.
Historical NoteThe USS HARTFORD held a special interest for Franklin Roosevelt because a Delano ancestor was involved in its construction. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral David Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
