Physical DescriptionA painting of the British topsail schooner, WANDERER, R.Y.S. It depicts a side view of the two-masted sailing ship, sails unfurled, on open water. An American flag [see Historical Note] flies at the stern. Somewhat behind the WANDERER, at the left of the painting, is a smaller two-masted sailing vessel. Another two-masted schooner is seen in the background on the right. The painting is unsigned and undated.
The painting is framed in 1" gilt and black wood frame with red undertones.
Historical NoteThough unsigned, this painting of the yacht, WANDERER, is believed to be by British artist Oswald Walters Brierly. Brierly, who had studied art, naval architecture, and rigging, started on a voyage from England to Australia in 1841 with his friend, Benjamin Boyd, the owner of the WANDERER. It has been determined from other depictions of the WANDERER that the flag flying from the ship has been altered in this version to make it American. The painting is framed in 1" gilt and black wood frame with red undertones.
