Physical DescriptionA model of the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter, BEAR. The ship has a white and red painted wooden hull, three masts with no sails, one smokestack, and several lifeboats. The model is affixed to a wooden base, the surface of which simulates the sea. Attached to the base is a metal plaque inscribed: COAST GUARD CUTTER / BEAR / BUILT 1874 SCOTLAND". The model and base are attached to a larger wooden base which has a perimeter groove to allow for the placement of a protective bonnet.
Historical NoteThis model was given to President Roosevelt by the maker, Christopher J. Hunteman, in 1934.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 27, 1941. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
