Physical DescriptionA ship model of the British frigate, HMS DISCOVERY. The wooden hull is covered in copper sheathing below the water line, and painted black with white trim above. The deck is made of varnished hardwood. Some of the sails are furled, and others unfurled. A British flag flies from the rear mast. The model is affixed to a wooden cradle stand and base. Affixed to the base is a metal plaque inscribed: WPA WASHINGTON ART PROJECT.
Historical NoteThis model was built by Captain John Looff of Tacoma, Washington for the Washington Art Project, Federal Art Project, Works Progress Administration. The model was presented to President Roosevelt by the Federal Works Agency, Works Progress Administration (Seventh District, Denver).
