Physical DescriptionA scale model (1" = 500") of the battleship, USS IOWA (BB-61). The wood and metal ship is dark gray with a black painted hull. The model rests on a natural wood launching strip which, in turn, is attached to a black-stained wooden base. Inscribed on the brass plaque attached to the launching strip: TO OUR COMMANDER IN CHIEF FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT / COMPLIMENTS OF "COMET METAL PRODUCTS CO., INC." N.Y., 2-22-1943. / U.S.S. IOWA CLASS.
Historical NoteThis is one of the recognition/teaching models produced for the U.S. Navy during World War II by the Comet Metal Products Co., Inc. of Richmond Hill, New York. This model was presented to FDR by Abraham Slonin, the company's founder, on March 2, 1943. Models like this one were used to teach ship recognition to naval personnel.
