Physical DescriptionA paperweight commemorating the launching of the escort aircraft carrier, USS ALAZON BAY (CVE-55). The paperweight consists of a small, heavy rectangular block of cast iron with inwardly curving right corners. Etched into the surface of the paperweight is an inscription that reads: U.S.S. Alazon Bay / ~ Sponsored by ~ / Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt / ~ April 5, 1943. ~ / Kaiser Company, Inc. / Vancouver Yard.
Historical NoteThe U.S. Navy escort aircraft carrier USS ALAZON BAY (renamed the USS CASABLANCA) was launched by Eleanor Roosevelt on April 5, 1943 at the Vancouver, Washington yard of the Kaiser Company, Inc. This paperweight, made from a bolt that was burned in half when the USS ALAZON BAY was launched, was sent to Eleanor Roosevelt by the Kaiser Company as a memento of the occasion.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on June 1, 1943. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
