Physical DescriptionA First Day of Issue stamp cover commemorating the Sesquicentennial of the first inauguration of an American president (George Washington) in 1789. On the left side of the envelope is a red, white, and blue illustrated cachet with the American flag, a portrait of George Washington, an image of Federal Hall in New York City, and the wording: “The 150th Anniversary of the First Inauguration / 1789 – 1939 / FIRST DAY COVER.”
The envelope is addressed to (typed): F.D. Roosevelt, / 1600 Pa. Avenue, / Washington, D.C.” The return address is typed vertically along the left edge: “R.E.M. 5714 1st St NW.” Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1939 red violet 3¢ Washington Taking Oath of Office postage stamp #22366 (Scott 854). The envelope is postmarked New York, New York, April 30, 1939 with a “FIRST DAY OF ISSUE” cancellation.
