Physical DescriptionA hand-painted photographic print of an engraving of the USS NORTH CAROLINA from a painting by Nicola Cammillieri. The image depicts a three-masted, 74-gun sailing ship in open water. Visible in the right background are several other sailing ships in the distance. To the left of the ship is a rowboat, and in the distant background, a fort. The inscription "13-9-4" appears in the lower left corner of the image, and the hand-lettered inscription "U.S.S. North Carolina, 1827" (possibly FDR's handwriting) in the lower right corner.
The print is matted with an off-white mat at the bottom of which is hand printed in ink: United States Ship / NORTH CAROLINA / 1827. Below the ship's name is a handwritten ink inscription by Josephus Daniels that reads: Christmas 1913 / Presented to Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of US Navy.
The print is matted, glazed (acrylic), and framed in a 1" gilt wood frame.
Historical NoteFDR displayed this painting of the USS NORTH CAROLINA (1820) directly behind his desk in his private study in the White House residence. The North Carolina was a 74-gun ship-of-the-line launched in 1820. Roosevelt gave this painting to Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels in 1914, while he was serving as Daniels’s deputy.
