FDR is sporting pince-nez glasses, and in his right hand he is holding a top hat, while in his left hand is a small NRA (National Recovery Administration) Blue Eagle flag on a stick. The caricature is unsigned by the artist.
Historical NoteThis copy of an FDR caricature by Conrado Walter Massaguer, and a similar one of Eleanor Roosevelt (MO 1971.64b), were sent from Mandel Brothers in Chicago to presidential secretary Marvin McIntyre in December 1933. The caricatures were accompanied by a request to know if it would be objectionable to the Roosevelts to use these caricatures of them - along with those of other prominent figures of 1933 - as window decorations in the Mandel Brothers department store between Christmas and New Year’s. The request was answered by White House Press Secretary Stephen Early who stated that there would be no objection if no advertising was involved with the use of the caricatures.Additional Details
