Physical DescriptionA green leather dog collar with a metal buckle. Hanging from the collar is a brass New York dog license tag inscribed: N Y S / DOG TAG / #95857 /1940.
Historical NotePresident Roosevelt’s dog, Fala, wore this collar when he came to live at the White House on November 10, 1940. FDR had a lifelong affection for pets. The best known was Fala, a Scottish terrier given to him by his distant cousin, Margaret “Daisy” Suckley, in 1940. During World War II, Fala became Roosevelt’s constant companion and the most famous dog in America. This collar is on display on a rotational schedule in the FALA exhibit in the Museum’s WORLD WAR II gallery.
