Historical NoteThe Democratic donkey and Republican elephant toast the 1933 legalization of beer on this commemorative glass piece. Prohibition repeal was a major plank in the Democratic Party’s 1932 platform. In 1933, while the 21st amendment to the Constitution (designed to repeal Prohibition) was making its way through the ratification process in the states, FDR amended the Volstead Act to allow the legal sale of beer. The glass is on display in the BEER RETURNS! exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
