Physical DescriptionA tan-colored stamp cover from Poland hand addressed in ink to President Roosevelt in Washington, DC. Adhered in the upper left of the envelope are a Polish 1935-1936 blue-green 25g Belvedere Palace postage stamp (Scott 298), and a Polish 1930 red 75g King John III Sobieski postage stamp (Scott 262). The envelope is postmarked Klimontow, Poland, March 12, 1937 and has a black ink Klimontow registration stamp.

On the reverse of the envelope is the hand written Polish return address. Also on the reverse is another postmark for Klimontow, Poland, as well as two postmarks for New York, NY, March 22, 1937, and one postmark for Washington, DC, March 23, 1937. A black ink stamped message reads: FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION / AUTHENTICATED BY H. R. HARMER INC., N. Y. The circled number "R57" is written in pencil in the lower right corner.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt was an avid, lifelong stamp collector who gathered over 1.2 million stamps into his personal collection during the course of his life. He began collecting stamps at the age of eight at the suggestion of his mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, who passed on her collection to him.

After FDR's death, his personal stamp collection, including this stamp cover, was sold at public auction in 1946 in accordance with his wishes.
