The wooden ship has a black hull with copper sheathing on the lower part, a detailed deck design with a single smokestack, and elaborate rigging with unfurled sails. An American flag and four pennants are attached to the rigging at the stern. The ship's name is on the end of the stern. The model comes equipped with a 6 volt electric motor. There is no cradle or base.
Historical NoteThis model was presented to President Roosevelt by the maker, Lieutenant William S. Burns, United States Navy, Retired, of Brooklyn, New York on October 27, 1943.

It is one of several models of the HARTFORD in Roosevelt’s ship model collection. The HARTFORD held a special interest for the President because a Delano ancestor was involved in its construction. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral David Farragut at the Battle of Mobile Bay in 1864.
