Physical DescriptionA large red, white, and blue crocheted 48-star American flag with crocheted stars on both the front and reverse sides. On the left edge of the flag is a white fabric header with five tabs.
Historical NoteThis handmade needlework flag was sent to Franklin Roosevelt in December 1942 as a Christmas gift by the makers, sisters Anita and Vicenta Ponce of Coachella, California. The flag was accompanied by a photograph of the Ponce sisters, posing with the flag. The photograph is inscribed: To Pres. Roosevelt, / A Merry Christmas / and a Happy and / Victorious New Year. / "The Ponce Sisters" / 12/4/42.The Ponce sisters were a famous dance team in the 1940s among California's Hispanic community.
