Physical DescriptionA curved-backed mahogany wooden chair of the Sheraton style. The dark-stained chair has a seat and back upholstered in green silk with gold snowflake-like pattern and finished with upholstery trim. Inserted into the wood above the seat back and below the seat are brass bands with an anthemion design. The seat back, seat facing, and legs are decorated with thin inset brass bands. Attached to the top of each front leg is a brass star. The underside of the seat is covered with black fabric with an attached label for Smith's Upholstery Shop in Poughkeepsie, NY dated January 20, 1953 (the date when the chair was reupholstered) and has a New York State inspection stamp adhered to the label.
Historical NoteThis Sheraton style chair by an unknown maker is one of four identical chairs (MO 1943.148.33-36) on display in FDR'S PRIVATE STUDY in the Permanent Exhibit.
Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
