Physical DescriptionA Lenox handled and footed demitasse cup from the Franklin D. Roosevelt White House china service. On a cream-colored background is the Great Seal of the United States in gold. The rim of the cup, handle, and circumference of the foot are also decorated in gold. The interior of the cup is undecorated.
On the underside of the cup, the manufacturer's information is stamped in gold: “[Lenox logo] / LENOX / MADE IN U.S.A.” The numbers “1603/P364” are handwritten in gold.
Historical NoteThis demitasse cup is part of a set of china featuring the Great Seal of the United States. Made for the 1939 World’s Fair by Thomas Haviland and Lenox, the set was on display in the U.S. Pavilion at the Fair. After the Fair closed in 1940, the china was delivered to the White House and incorporated into the china service.On the underside of the cup, the manufacturer's information is stamped in gold: “[Lenox logo] / LENOX / MADE IN U.S.A.” The numbers “1603/P364” are handwritten in gold.
