Historical NotePresident William V. Tubman of the Republic of Liberia sent this ivory paperweight to FDR in February 1944 “as a little memento of Liberian material and manufacture which I trust will serve to keep Liberia fresh in your mind.” In January 1943, Roosevelt had visited Liberia to review U.S. troops serving at a military base near Monrovia. The base was established during the war to refuel and maintain American military aircraft in the region.Additional Details
