Historical NoteShortly after America entered World War II, Winston W. Stadig of Oak Lawn, Rhode Island created plaster statuettes of the “Big Three”—Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, and Joseph Stalin. In May 1944, he sent the statuettes (MO 1945.85.5-7) to FDR. In a letter to Roosevelt that accompanied his gift he recalled, “Three years ago not many had the courage to feel hopeful. More than all others you, Mr. President, and Mr. Churchill and Mr. Stalin were so strongly confident in ultimate victory over international gangsters that the mesmerism of fear which had gripped the world was broken.”
