Physical DescriptionA red leather portfolio entitled: Portfolio of / Spanish Colonial / Design in / New Mexico. It was edited by E. Boyd, for the Federal Art Project of New Mexico. The portfolio contains a set of 50 (MO 1956.237.1-50) hand-pulled, watercolored woodblock and linocut prints depicting examples of Spanish Colonial decorative arts dating from the eighteenth to the early twentieth century. The folio concentrates on religious art, and includes renderings of bultos (sculptures), altars, furniture, architectural details, and other objects. Two hundred copies of the portfolio were made, each with 50 prints.
The prints were created by artists employed by the Federal Art Project of New Mexico. None of the artists are indicated on the artwork, but they include: Mary Baca, Nash Bachicha, Jean Barka, Maye Barris, Charles Barrows, Mae Bennett Brown, Stanley Carson, and Carlos Cervantez. The portfolio also includes a 40-page booklet giving some of the background of Colonial New Mexico and printed descriptions of the plates.
Included with the portfolio is a 40-page series booklet titled: Portfolio of Spanish Colonial Design in New Mexico / Prepared by the Federal Art Project of New Mexico of the Division of Women's and Professional Projects, Works Project Administration, Santa Fe, 1938.
