Physical DescriptionAn octagonal pinback campaign button. Silver text on a blue background reads: REPEAL / 18TH / AMENDMENT / OVER. On the reverse of the button is the following text: REPEAL WILL MEAN / A RETURN TO LAW & ORDER / PROMOTE TEMPERANCE & / AID UNEMPLOYMENT. The manufacturer's information is also on the reverse.
Historical NoteThe 18th Amendment to the Constitution, ratified in 1919, banned the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors. Repeal of the amendment was a major plank in the Democratic Party’s 1932 platform and was promoted in campaign buttons and paraphernalia. This button is on display in the BEER RETURNS! exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
