Physical DescriptionA white porcelain plate commemorating George Washington’s home, Mount Vernon. At the center of the round plate is a color image of a patriotic painted scene showing an American flag partially pulled aside to reveal an angled view of the Mount Vernon residence and part of its grounds. The artist’s facsimile signature is at the bottom of the artwork: “Allen Saalburg.”

On the reverse of the plate is the Castleton China logo, along with “MADE IN U.S.A.,” encircled by text that reads: “THE DESIGN OF THIS DECORATIVE PLAQUE WAS ADAPTED FROM THE PRIZE WINNING COVER OF HOUSE AND GARDEN JULY 1942.” Also on the reverse is a round sticker with printed and written text that reads: “No. 406 / COLLECTION OF / • PRESIDENT & MRS • FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT.”
Historical NoteThis plate, one in a set of 105 plates, formed lot number 406 in the Exhibition and Sale of the Collection of the late President Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt that took place at the Hammer Galleries in New York, NY, November 12 to December 3, 1951. Adapted from the prize winning July 1942 cover of House and Garden magazine, the set was made especially for Eleanor Roosevelt.
