Physical DescriptionA small model of a Brazilian jangada. The wooden boat has a single fabric sail on which is inscribed in ink: To President / Roosevelt / Best wishes / from / L - - M - - / Recife - 16-3-44. The deck of the boat has wooden parts, a woven basket, and a stone piece possibly meant as an anchor.
Historical NoteThe Brazilian jangada is a raft-like boat used in coastal trade. This model was presented to First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt at Recife, Brazil in March 1944 as a gift for the President.

Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on November 22, 1944. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
