Physical DescriptionA stained and coated wooden box with a removable lid. A copper alloy plaque, inlaid into the exterior of the lid, has an engraved Presidential Seal bordered by a star in each corner. Dividers inside the box create three compartments. A scrap of plain weave cotton fabric found inside the box has illegible ink writing. The box has carved wooden feet, and the underside of the box is has green baize cloth adhered to it.
Historical NoteThis box was presented to FDR on January 30, 1943 by his former naval aide, Rear Admiral John "Jack" R. Beardall, then serving as Superintendent of the United States Naval Academy. It is on display on the desk in FDR'S PRIVATE STUDY in the Permanent Exhibit.
