Physical DescriptionA model of the Yapese outrigger canoe, POPOU LUKAN. The wooden canoe has a black hull with red, white, and black trim. On one side of the canoe is the name: POPOU LUKAN. The model includes a removable platform that sits on top of the canoe.
Historical NoteThis model was made by Lucom, a Yapese native who had been relocated to Saipan during World War II. He produced this model while working in the Handicraft Department of the Civil Affairs Section, Saipan. The model was presented to President Roosevelt on December 7, 1944, by the people of Saipan as an expression of their appreciation for their deliverance from Japanese occupation.Additional Details
Custodial History NoteDeposited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum by Franklin D. Roosevelt on March 10, 1945. It was donated as a bequest of FDR to the Library in 1947.
