Physical DescriptionA half-hull model of a sailing vessel, the ALERT. The ship has a painted blue hull under full sail, the sails being made of metal. It is mounted on a plaster background representing the ocean and sky within an oval framed in gilded rope. A small sailboat is visible off to the right. The artist's name is in the lower right: J. Grundy.
The model is one of a pair (see also MO 1941.7.4).
Historical NoteThis half-hull model was made by Josiah Grundy of Lakeside, California. It depicts the ALERT, one of the merchant ships featured in Richard Henry Dana, Jr.’s memoir, TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST. Mr. Grundy presented the model to President Roosevelt in June 1939.The model is one of a pair (see also MO 1941.7.4).
