Physical DescriptionA Tennessee marble statue of a Mexican mother and child. The figure depicts a standing, barefoot woman wearing a long simple dress and with her hair in braids. She is carrying a child on her back. The artist's name is etched on the bottom: D.H. 38 F.A.P.

The sculpture sits on a separate wooden block base, though it is not known if this original to the piece.
Historical NoteDonal Hord created this sculpture in 1938 for the California Art Project, Federal Art Project, Works Progress Administration (WPA). Based in San Diego, California, Hord was a prolific artist who produced many pieces for the WPA. The labor for this piece was performed by Homer Dana, a lifelong assistant to Hord. This sculpture is on display in the NEW DEAL ARTWORKS exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
