Physical DescriptionA woven campaign ribbon. On an off-white background is a printed black and white portrait of Henry Clay. Above the portrait is the printed message: THE PEOPLE'S WELFARE MY REWARD. Printed below the portrait is his name, "HENRY CLAY," followed by a quote of his: "Protection to American Industry is necessary to secure the Independence of our Country. And a National Bank is as necessary to a Nation as National Laws. H. Clay [facsimile signature]".
Historical NoteHenry Clay was the National Republican Party’s unsuccessful presidential candidate in 1832.This campaign ribbon was sent to Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1939 by Thomas W. Connell of Springfield, Massachusetts.
