Historical NoteThe mug of beer depicted on this campaign license plate refers to repeal of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution. Ratified in 1919, the 18th Amendment banned the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors. Repeal of the amendment was a major plank in the Democratic Party’s 1932 platform and was promoted in campaign buttons and paraphernalia. This license plate is on display in the BEER RETURNS! exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
