Physical DescriptionA resin-filled polished black variegated marble desk stand. Attached to the base are two pen holders, a copper alloy clock (left) and barometer (right) -- both in the form of ship's wheels --, and a rolling daily calendar in the center set for: THURSDAY 29 MARCH 31. Also mounted to the surface of the base is a steel inscription plate reading: GOVERNOR / FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / CHRISTMAS 1929. Four block marble feet are on the underside of the base. There is no maker indicated.
Historical NoteThis desk stand is part of a set of four black marble items (MO 1947.93.435.1-4) that President Roosevelt kept on his Oval Office desk. The other items in the set are: a letter rack, an ink blotter, and a letter opener. The set was presented to FDR as a Christmas gift in 1929 while he was serving as governor of New York State. The desk stand is on display in the FDR’S OVAL OFFICE DESK exhibit in the Museum’s APRIL 12, 1945 gallery.Additional Details
