Physical Descriptiona) A hammered pewter matchbox holder with the silhouette of a sailing ship on the top with the engraving: USS SEQUOIA. The holder also has three crudely engraved demon figures on the underside labeled: Pewtercrats.

b) A Red Top Safety Match matchbox with thirty-four unused matches inside.
Historical NotePresident Roosevelt kept this matchbox holder on his Oval Office desk. The USS SEQUOIA served as the presidential yacht for eight presidents, including Franklin Roosevelt. This object is on display in the FDR’S OVAL OFFICE DESK exhibit in the Museum’s APRIL 12, 1945 gallery.
