Physical DescriptionA walking stick designed from a pine plank of FDR's 1933 inaugural platform. A brass plaque is inscribed: FASHIONED FROM A PLANK OF THE INAUGURAL PLATFORM ON WHICH FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT STOOD WHEN MADE PRESIDENT MARCH 4TH 1933. Another plaque on the opposite side is inscribed: PRESENTED TO PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT / BY WM. V. GRUBBS. The stick has a brass cap at the tip.
Historical NoteMany of FDR’s admirer’s sent him canes and walking sticks as gifts. William V. Grubbs fashioned this walking stick from a plank taken from the platform on which Roosevelt took the oath of office as President of the United States during the March 4, 1933 inauguration. It is on display in THE MARCH OF DIMES AND FDR exhibit in the Museum’s FOUNDATIONS OF A PUBLIC LIFE gallery.
