Physical DescriptionA salmon-colored stamp cover commemorating the 1937 decommissioning of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS BONITA (SS-165). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red printed cachet consisting of an illustration of a rope-encircled life preserver ring inside which is a drawing of a submarine and ship on open sea, and an airplane up in the sky. Text above and on the illustration reads: DECOMMISSIONING / U.S. NAVY / U.S.S. BONITA. The cachet designer’s name is within the drawing: DR. HUTNICK.

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1930 brown 1½¢ Warren G. Harding stamp (Scott 684). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. BONITA, June 4, 1937.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.
