Physical DescriptionA buff-colored stamp cover commemorating the 1935 decommissioning of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS S-48. On the left side of the envelope is a stamped black ink cachet consisting of a double-banded circle within which is “★ 5 ★” flanked by seahorses. Wrapped around the outside of the circle is text that reads: USS S48 / DECOMMISSIONED / USS S48 / PHILADELPHIA, PENNA. The cachet designer’s name is within the double bands: DR. HUTNICK, 1935. To the right of the cachet is an embossed seal for U.S. Submarines in the Department of the Navy.
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1930 brown 1½¢ Warren G. Harding stamp (Scott 684) with “U.S.S. S-48” typed above it. The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. AYLWIN, September 16, 1935 with a "0913 / OFFI. RITE" cancellation.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA. The number "033" is also stamped on the reverse.
