Physical DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1934 commissioning of the U.S. Navy submarine, USS CUTTLEFISH (SS-171). The envelope has a double cachet. On the left side of the envelope is a red, white, and blue American flag. Over stamped on the flag is a purple ink cachet with the illustration of a submarine and a large anchor with text that reads: U•S•S• CUTTLEFISH / COMMISSIONED JUN 8 1934 / SUBMARINE BASE NEW LONDON, CT• / LT COMDR C•W• STYER, U•S•N• / COMMANDING / CACHET / SPONSORED BY / OFFICERS / AND MEN / U•S• SUBMARINE / CUTTLEFISH / BUILT BY ELECTRIC BOAT.

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Executive Mansion / Washington / D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: one 1933 yellow green 1¢ Century of Progress Issue stamp (Scott 728), and one 1932 carmine rose 2¢ Washington Bicentennial Issue stamp (Scott 707). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. CUTTLEFISH, June 8, 1934, with a "FIRST DAY IN / COMMISSION" cancellation.

The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.
