Physical DescriptionA legal-sized stamp cover commemorating the 1936 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS CUSHING (DD-376). On the left side of the envelope is a blue cachet consisting of a side view illustration of the USS CUSHING with text below that reads: UNITED STATES SHIP CUSHING / Commissioned 28 August 1936 / PUGET SOUND NAVY YARD / BREMERTON, WASHINGTON. The text is bordered on three sides by a chain design with anchors at the bottom two corners.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): The President / The White House / Washington, D.C. There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1936 purple 3¢ Oregon Territory Issue stamp (Scott 783). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. CUSHING, August 28, 1936, with a "FIRST DAY IN / COMMISSION" cancellation.
