Physical DescriptionA mint green stamp cover commemorating the 1938 commissioning of the U.S. Navy light cruiser, USS BOISE (CL-47). On the left side of the envelope is a blue and red stamped cachet consisting of an illustration of a patriotic stars and stripes pennant below which is an illustration of a Navy ship. Text on the cachet reads: UNITED STATES NAVY / FIRST DAY POSTAL SERVICE / U.S.S. BOISE / NORFOLK, VA. / KEEL LAID APRIL 1 1935 / LAUNCHED DEC. 3 1936 / NEWPORT NEWS, VA. / SPONSORED BY • R. C. D. 70. The cachet designer’s name is along the edge of the pennant: HUTNICK.
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in red and blue ink): The President of the United States / Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt / Washington / D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope are two U.S. stamps: a 1936 green 1¢ Navy Issue stamp (Scott 790), and a 1925 olive brown ½¢ Nathan Hale stamp (Scott 551). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. BOISE, August 12, 1938 with a "COMMISSION / DATE" cancellation.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.
