Physical DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1812 naval battle between the ships USS CONSTITUTION and HMS JAVA. On the left side of the envelope is a green cachet consisting of a line drawing of the two ships at battle beneath which is a box with text that reads: BATTLE BETWEEN THE CONSTITUTION AND THE JAVA IN WHICH MARINE RIFLEMEN TOOK TERRIBLE TOLL OF THE BRITISH. THE JAVA SURRENDERED IN THREE HOURS.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt / The White House / Washington, D.C. There is no return address. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 purple 3¢ Thomas Jefferson Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 807). The envelope is postmarked Boston, Massachusetts Navy Yard, December 26, 1939.
