Physical DescriptionA stamp cover commemorating the 1941 first day of postal service for the U.S. Navy submarine tender, USS GRIFFIN (AS-13). On the left side of the envelope is a printed color cachet with an illustration of a Navy ship. Blue and red text above and below the illustration reads: God Blessed America / A TWO OCEAN NAVY TO PROTECT IT / ©. The words “VIA AIR MAIL” are stamped in purple ink to the right of the cachet and above the address.
The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in ink): President F. D. Roosevelt / White House / Washington, / D. C. There is no return address Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1941 carmine 6¢ Air Mail stamp (Scott C25). The envelope is postmarked U.S.S. GRIFFIN, August 25 [1941] with a "FIRST DAY / MAIL" cancellation.
