Physical DescriptionAn envelope commemorating the 1942 commissioning of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS HOBSON (DD-464). On the left side of the envelope is a raised gold cachet with an image of an eagle on a patriotic shield flanked by stars. Text below the image reads: USN / “OUR NAVY” / FIRST DAY POSTAL SERVICE / USS HOBSON DD 464 / COMMISSIONED NAVY YARD 22 JAN 1942 / KEEL LAID NOV. 14TH. 1940 / LAUNCHED 8 - SEP 1941 / CHARLESTON, S. C. / R. C. D. 70.
The envelope is addressed to (typed): Honorable Franklin D. Roosevelt / The Commander in Chief / of the Army and Navy, / The White House, / Washington, D. C. Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 bister brown 1½¢ Martha Washington Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 805). The envelope is postmarked U.S. Navy, January 22, 1942.
The return address is ink stamped in blue on the reverse of the envelope: S. E. HUTNICK, M. D. / 5933 LANSDOWNE AVENUE / WEST PHILA., PA.
