Physical Descriptiona) A stamp cover commemorating the 1942 launching of the U.S. Navy destroyer, USS STANLY (DD-478). On the left side of the envelope is a black and hand-colored illustrated cachet consisting of a line drawing of the STANLY moving through open water. Text encircling and above, on, and below the image reads: “★ U.S.S. STANLY ★ U.S. NAVY YARD, CHARLESTON, S.C. / LAUNCHED / MAY 2, 1942 / CACHET SPONSORED BY NAVY YARD DEVELOP. ASSOCIATION.” The maker’s initials are to the right of the ship’s bow: “DFG.”

The envelope is addressed to (handwritten in ink): "PRESIDENT OF U.S.A. / WHITE HOUSE / WASHINGTON.” Adhered in the upper right corner of the envelope is a U.S. 1938 bister brown 1½¢ Martha Washington Presidential Issue stamp (Scott 805). The envelope is postmarked Charleston, South Carolina, May 2, 1942 with a "NAVY YARD STA." cancellation.

Written in ink on the reverse of the envelope: “DRAFTING ROOM / CHARLESTON / NAVY YARD.”


b) Enclosed in the envelope is a printed program for the launching ceremonies of the USS STANLY on May 2, 1942.
