Physical DescriptionAn original black and white etching featuring a portion of the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The etching features an angled overhead view of the Court of Peace with the Federal Building (U.S. Government) at one end flanked by the Hall of Nations created by a series of interconnected pavilions. The buildings form a “U” around the Court of Peace. The Lagoon of Nations is located at the entry to the Court of Peace.
Handwritten pencil notes in the bottom margin of the etching read: “U.S. Govt Buildings and Halls of Nation - N.Y. World's Fair, to President Roosevelt / Gordon Gilkey / the original from 'Etchings – N.Y. World's Fair.'"
Historical NoteGordon W. Gilkey (1912 - 2000) was hired as the official artist for the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Over a two-year period, Gilkey created approximately sixty etchings that captured various aspects of the fair. One of the pencil notes at the bottom of this etching indicates that this image was used in Gilkey's book, "Etchings New York World's Fair," first published in 1939 by Charles Scribner's Sons.Additional DetailsHandwritten pencil notes in the bottom margin of the etching read: “U.S. Govt Buildings and Halls of Nation - N.Y.
