Physical DescriptionA large and heavily carved wooden model of the 17th century Dutch man-of-war, DE BURG. Supposedly made in the 17th century, the model has an antique finish, is painted in black, red, and blue, has a very high stern, three masts with full rigging, and unfurled sails. Three red, white and blue Dutch flags are affixed at various points. Model is fixed to a wooden base and is protected by an acrylic bonnet.
Historical NoteThis model is believed to have been built around 1636, the same year as the original ship. Models like this one were often placed in churches to bring good fortune to the ship and, thus, are called church models. This model was presented to President Roosevelt by Armand Hammer of Hammer Galleries, New York City In December 1940. Hammer had acquired it from the Enthoven Collection in Amsterdam on November 24, 1932.
