Physical DescriptionA blue and white plate commemorating the 1937 coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom. At the center of the white plate, in blue, are the profile portraits of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth flanked by the letters "G" and "R" and with the words "DIEU • ET • MON • DROIT" below. The portraits are within a laurel wreath topped by a crown. Encircling the wreath are nine shields and coat of arms relating to the British monarchy.
On the reverse of the plate is information on the coronation and the maker of the plate: [image of a crown] / TO COMMEMORATE / THE CORONATION / OF THEIR MAJESTIES / KING GEORGE VI / QUEEN ELIZABETH / – 1937 – / WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND / KEITH MURRAY [facsimile signature]. Encircling this text are the names of various countries with ties to the British Empire: ENGLAND • SCOTLAND • IRELAND • WALES • INDIA • NEW ZEALAND • AUSTRALIA • SOUTH AFRICA • CANADA. Along the bottom are several manufacturing marks stamped into the surface: WEDGWOOD / MADE IN ENGLAND / G 3737.
