Historical NoteCallie Jeffress Fanning Smith of Sulphur Springs, Texas produced this remarkable quilt and sent it to Eleanor Roosevelt in March 1940. In a letter to Mrs. Roosevelt, Smith wrote: “To say that I admire you tremendously is only saying it mildly. . . . It is a feeling of great pride to me that I am living today during your time. . . . I know that my brush does not have the perfect touch that was in my mind and heart, but you will, somehow, know that I wished that I could make something very beautiful for you.”
