Physical DescriptionA scale model of the aircraft carrier (Midway class), USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT. Fabricated from U.S. Navy blueprints, the plastic ship has a red and gray hull with guns lining the top section. The tan upper deck/flight deck, with the number "42" written in yellow at both ends, has 25 planes are fixed to its surface. The gray navigation station also has "42", along with strings of nautical flags hanging from either side of it. The model is fixed to a pair of plastic cradle stands mounted to a wooden base. A plastic plaque on base is inscribed: AIRCRAFT CARRIER / (MIDWAY CLASS) / FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT / DESIGNED TO SCALE FROM U.S. NAVY BLUEPRINTS / BY REVELL, INC. VENICE, CAL.
Historical NoteThis model of the USS FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT (CVB/CVA/CV-42) was presented to James Roosevelt, FDR's oldest son, by Revell, Inc. on September 10, 1954. At James’s request, the Revell company forwarded the model to the Roosevelt Library.
