Physical DescriptionA George Washington High School Award issued to Eleanor Roosevelt. The award consists of a vertically placed round piece of wood attached to a horizontal two-tiered rectangular wood base. Mounted to the front of the award is a round metal plaque with gold-colored relief lettering that reads: THE / GEORGE WASHINGTON / HIGH SCHOOL / AWARD / TO THE / OUTSTANDING CITIZEN / OF THE / CITY OF NEW YORK. A rectangular metal plaque mounted to the front of the base has additional raised text that reads: 1958 / ELEANOR ROOSEVELT.
On the underside of the base is a manufacturer's label for Huber Allied, Inc. of New York, NY.
Historical NoteOn February 21, 1958 Eleanor Roosevelt traveled to New York City to receive this award from George Washington High School. Mrs. Roosevelt wrote about the presentation of the award in her February 25, 1958 edition of her popular "My Day" newspaper column, sharing: "I went up to the George Washington High School here in New York City last Friday to receive the annual school award. The whole school, 4,200 pupils strong, votes on who shall receive this award, and I felt it was a great honor these young people had done me."On the underside of the base is a manufacturer's label for Huber Allied, Inc. of New York, NY.
