Physical DescriptionA semi-transparent hollow glass electric lamp in the form of a Franklin D. Roosevelt head and shoulders bust. The glass has a light sepia tone to it. FDR is shown wearing a suit jacket, shirt, and tie and the initials “F.D.R.” are on the proper left jacket collar.The lamp is wired for electricity so that the whole bust can be illuminated from the interior.
Historical NoteFranklin Roosevelt loomed large in American popular culture. Elected to four terms as America’s president, he became a familiar presence on the radio and in newspapers, magazines, and newsreels. Inevitably, his well-known likeness appeared on products such as this lamp. It is on display in the ROOSEVELT IN POP CULTURE exhibit in the Museum’s NEW DEAL gallery.
